How to Find Your Denim Style, Build a Wardrobe, and Make It Last
Raw denim starts with the jeans, but it rarely stops there. Once you begin looking, the questions pile up: which fit works for you, what does selvedge actually mean, which brands are worth paying for, what to wear with the jeans, and how to make all of it last.
This series is your starting point. It’s not a course, it’s not homework. But it gives you a practical way into raw denim and the wardrobe that comes with it.
Start with the guide that answers the question you have now, or follow the natural path:
- First, find your lane – Raw denim makes most sense once you understand the style you are already leaning towards.
- Next, build the wardrobe – Jeans matter, but they work best when the footwear, base layers, shirts, jackets and other pieces around them make sense too.
- Then, learn how to look after your wardrobe – It’s not about keeping everything perfect; it’s about making your clothes last long enough to truly become yours.
There’s also the story behind Denimhunters in this series. Less about what to buy, more about why the site looks, reads and works the way it does. It’s for long-time readers, and for anyone who wants to know who’s behind all this.
What Denimhunters Actually Is
At its simplest, Denimhunters is a website about better jeans and the clothes that go with them.
It started in 2011 as a denim blog without a business plan. Since then, it’s become a guide to understanding, buying, wearing and caring for better jeans and well-made menswear. Raw denim, selvedge denim, work shirts, flannels, boots, T-shirts, jackets—the kind of stuff that gets better with wear.
But the site’s never been just about the products. The underlying goal is to help you understand what’s worth paying for, and whether it actually makes sense for the way you live. That means the site is for people who are curious enough to care, but not necessarily far enough down the rabbit hole to speak the language yet.
Full disclosure: Denimhunters makes revenue through buying guides and links to brands and retailers. When you buy after you click a link, it may generate a commission. The editorial job stays the same: explain what is worth considering, what the trade-offs are, and whether it fits the wardrobe you are trying to build.

Find Your Denim Style
Raw denim isn’t one look. It can point towards workwear, cowboy style, military clothing, streetwear, minimalism, outdoorswear, rebel style, dad style, maximalism, or something in between. Most people do not fit perfectly into one lane, and they do not need to. But knowing the lanes makes the choices easier.
This guide starts with fit, because fit is the part that affects everything else the most. A pair of regular straights, a slim tapered or a loose high-rise can all be raw denim style, but they can also send the wardrobe in very different directions.
From there, this guide looks at the main denim style archetypes and the pieces that tend to sit around them.
Read this guide if you are asking:
- I don’t know where to start with raw denim.
- What kind of jeans should I even be wearing?
- Why do my jeans never look right with the rest of what I wear?
- What does workwear style actually mean in practice?
Build Your Wardrobe
This guide helps you build your wardrobe in stages without trying to buy everything at once. Start with the pieces that shape everything else: jeans, footwear and base layers. Then build out the middle with shirts, jackets, knitwear, outerwear and other trousers. Add details once the wardrobe has shape.
The point isn’t to create a fixed uniform. It is to make better choices because you understand what each piece is doing.
A good raw denim wardrobe should feel useful, not theoretical. The jeans should work with boots or sneakers. The T-shirts and henleys should sit properly underneath. The shirts and jackets should match the direction you’re going. The details should support the wardrobe, not distract from it.
Read this guide if you are asking questions like:
- What should I buy first for a raw denim wardrobe?
- What goes with raw denim jeans?
- How do you build a denim wardrobe from scratch?
- Do I need boots with raw denim?
Make Your Wardrobe Last
Raw denim care is not just about washing jeans. This guide covers the care principles that help the whole wardrobe last longer. It starts with the two things most people new to raw denim worry about most—washing and repairing jeans—then applies the same practical logic to the rest of what you wear.
Denim care gets overcomplicated because raw denim natural changes. It fades, shrinks, bleeds, softens, creases and wears out. That’s the appeal, but it also makes people nervous. The result is a lot of bad advice: never wash, wait six months, freeze your jeans, do not ruin the fades.
The better approach is simpler. Wash things when they need washing. Air things when they only need air. Repair small problems before they become big ones. Treat leather, wool, cotton, and denim differently. Do not preserve clothes so carefully that you forget to wear them.
Read this guide if you are asking:
- When should I wash raw denim?
- Does washing raw denim ruin the fades?
- How do I repair raw denim jeans?
- How do I care for leather jackets and boots?
- How do I keep white t-shirts white?
Why Denimhunters Looks the Way It Does
There was no plan to make this a business in the beginning. Just curiosity, some experience selling jeans in retail, too much denim enthusiasm, and a need to explain what I was learning.
Fifteen years later, the site has been rebuilt more than once. It’s lost content, birthed books, produced podcasts, built buying guides, launched newsletters, helped shape Weirloom, and finally started earning money in a way that fits the editorial work rather than bending it.
This piece tells that story through a series of why questions: why the writing was never for sale, why it took this long to earn revenue, and what all of that has to do with where I grew up.
Read this guide if you are asking:
- Who’s behind Denimhunters?
- Is Denimhunters independent?
- How does Denimhunters make money?
- Why should I trust Denimhunters over other denim sites?
Where to Go First?
Start with the style guide if you’re new to raw denim and unsure what kind of jeans or wardrobe actually suits you.
Start with the wardrobe guide if you already know what you like, but are trying to decide what to buy and what can wait.
Start with the care guide if you have a pair of jeans already and are worried about washing, repairing or ruining them.
Start with the story if you’ve been reading Denimhunters for years and never quite understood why it looks the way it does.
There’s no wrong order. Raw denim is easier once you stop trying to learn everything at once. Pick the question that matters now, follow that, and build from there.
Understand the Details That Matter
I’m Thomas, founder of Denimhunters. Every Friday, I send out my newsletter that goes deeper into denim—how jeans are made, why details matter, and how to make better choices without the noise.
